Canadian singer/songwriter Basia Bulat came on the face of it verboten of nowhere to become ane of the most talked about new artists in both Canada and the United Kingdom with the release of her number one rough album, Oh, My Darling, in 2007. Originally from Toronto, Bulat lives and writes in the quieter community of London, Ontario, where she recorded a self-released EP in 2005. Bulat's rich, expressive voice is the ideal vehicle for her songs, which manage with love and life-time with a combination of unhappiness and curiosity, and her melodies are bolstered by a band that incorporates strings and keyboards along with the traditional drums and guitar. In 2006, producer Howard Bilerman, c. H. Best known for his run with the Arcade Fire, took Bulat and her band into the studio to saucer her first full-length record album; the issue, Oh, My Darling, caught the ear of the honored U.K. label Rough Trade, which signed Bulat and released the disk in the springtime of 2007 ahead she had a trade in Canada or the United States. British reviews for Oh, My Darling were wildly enthusiastic, and a circuit of England and Europe impressed both critics and fans. Canadian main label Hardwood Records (home to famed singer/songwriter Hayden) signed Bulat in the summertime of 2007, with Oh, My Darling scheduled for release in the fall.

The Black Keys Mellow Out, Sign Autographs for Policemen

After four months on the road in support of this year's Attack and Release, it's completely reasonable that the Black Keys might feel the need to chill out a bit. As such, the duo downed water last night at McCarren Park Pool and seemed to be pacing themselves carefully. They played with their usual precision, but we would liked to have seen a little more wildness. The first few songs were subdued, with drummer Dan Auerbach warbling through the opener, Girl Is on My Mind (also the first song at their Terminal 5 show in May). Thickfreakness chugged along like a train with a broken or maybe just wacky axle.

But things started to pick up for 10 AM Automatic, which had almost a hip-hop beat and an apocalyptic ending, and Same Old Thing, during which our friend noted, Its getting heavier. By Stack Shot Billy, in which Auerbach mysteriously changed keys, then changed back again or did we imagine that? the spell was cast. It helped that there were about 0.9 joints per capita. What the fuck is that, a helicopter? someone commented mid-song, apropos of nothing. Things were strange indeed, and wonderful: During Everywhere I Go, played as a holy, flaming march, we thought, Whats that sound? A steam shovel, a herd of elk? Meanwhile, Auerbachs hair, close-pressed to his head at the shows start, was unfurling.

But things were, in the end, mellow. Breaks, a great tune from their no-nonsense first album, The Big Come Up, settled into a funk beat before turning into a leisurely slow jam. The last song of their set, I Got Mine, was restrained, and we couldnt help but think of all the songs we long to hear at a Black Keys show and never do. (Would it have been too heavy-handed for them to have played Brooklyn Bound?) When they came on for their encore, Auerbach confided that a cop had approached him next to the stage. He wanted my autograph, he said. The world must be ending. Dan, we miss when you were running from the law. Kathleen Reeves

Len Wiseman to direct 'Gears of War'

Chris Morgan will write the video game adaptation

New Line is putting "Gears of War" in motion, setting Len Wiseman to direct the video game adaptation being produced by Temple Hill's Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey.

Chris Morgan, who wrote the upcoming Universal tentpoles "Wanted" and "The Fast and the Furious 4," has been hired to write the screenplay. Wiseman and Morgan will develop the story treatment.

The movement on the project suggests that the reconfigured New Line won't be confined to horror, thrillers and low-budget comedies but will be able to tackle big-budget projects outside the scope initially ascribed to the Warner Bros. division.

"Gears," developed by Epic Games, became an instant success when it debuted on the Xbox 360 in November 2006. It became one of the most popular games on the Xbox Live service, overtaking "Halo 2," and sold more than 3 million units worldwide in its first 10 weeks. It received numerous awards, including Gamespot's Game of the Year and the Interactive Achievement Awards' Overall Game of the Year.

Set on the planet Sera, the game thrusts players into a battle for survival between humans and a race of creatures that surface from the bowels of the planet known as the Locust Horde. Players assume identities of soldiers on Delta Squad as they fight to save Sera's inhabitants.

Overseeing for New Line are Richard Brener, Walter Hamada and Dave Neustadter. Stuart Beattie was the original writer on the project.

Video game adaptations have proved a tricky art to master in Hollywood. Some movies have fallen apart because of creative and economic pressures ("Halo") or just not performed well at the boxoffice ("Doom").

Cliff Bleszinski, the "Gears" design director at Epic, said the tricks to adapting a game are simple: "Hollywood needs to take the source material seriously, win over the avid gamers and make it work for an audience that is young and old, male and female." But he also admitted that that plan is easier said than done.

"Disney made a great movie out of a theme park ride, and somebody is sooner or later going to make a great one out of a video game," Bleszinski said. "Having someone like Len really helps the odds. I think we're going to create something special here."

The ICM-repped Wiseman last directed "Live Free or Die Hard," which grossed about $135 million in the U.S., and was behind the vampire-werewolf "Underworld" franchise. Morgan is repped by ICM. The two wrote together on "Shell Game," a sci-fi project set up at Sony.
